Post Processor Editing & Optimization: Upgrading What You Already Have

You don't always need a post processor built from scratch. If your current one mostly works but is missing a feature, running slower than it should, or was never updated after a controller firmware upgrade, editing the existing post is faster and cheaper than starting over.

When editing makes more sense than a rebuild

• Your post works for basic parts but doesn't support probing cycles you now need
• You've added a rotary axis or B-axis and the post wasn't written for multi-axis output
• Cycle times are longer than they should be — excess rapid moves, inefficient retracts, redundant tool changes
• Your controller received a firmware update and some commands changed or were deprecated
• You need tool life management or multi-spindle/turret support added

What we look at first

We start by reviewing your current post processor file and a sample of its NC output against real toolpaths, so we understand exactly what's already working before changing anything — the goal is to preserve everything that's reliable and only touch what needs fixing. This is also where we catch subtle bugs, like duplicate tool-change blocks or M-code sequences firing twice, that can sit unnoticed for months.

Typical optimizations we make

Cleaner retract logic between operations, correct RTCP/TCP output (G43.4, TRAORI, M128) for simultaneous multi-axis work, proper subprogram structure (M98/M99) to shorten file size and improve readability, and firmware-correct M-code sequencing for drilling-then-routing operations on nested-based machines.
